Recycling Christmas trees-A green alternative to kick off 2012

OTTAWA – For those who have taken down your Christmas tree, you are ahead of the game.  Those who plan on taking them down this week, they can be recycled.  Donating a spruce, pine or fir tree is another green alternative to recycling once the holiday season is over. The program is only for real trees, and they must be cleared of any Christmas decorations.

The Elk Ranch on Old Carp Road and the Constance Creek Wildlife Refuge on Dunrobin Road have set up a recycle program for Christmas trees as food for elk and goats.  Thom Van Eeghen, the owner of the Elk Ranch on Old Carp Road said the elk really enjoy the post holiday treat.

You can drop off your tree anytime year-round at the Constance Creek Wildlife Refuge at 2494 Dunrobin Road in the ditch or on the front lawn, or at the Elk Ranch, located at 1271 Old Carp Road., in front of the barn.

Trees will be collected from Jan. 16-21.  Information on what days can be found at the City of Ottawa Collection Calendar link.  Enter your street information, click on the calendar for your street and you will find the collection date for your address.

Trees wrapped in plastic or those which still have decorations especially tinsel attached will not be collected. In order to avoid problems with collection or snow removal operations, place your Christmas tree at the curb the night before your scheduled collection day. Trees frozen in snow banks will not be picked up.

Homes on collection calendars B and C can throw out the Christmas tree on the regular garbage day the week of Jan. 9. Christmas trees will be picked up from homes on calendars A and D the week of Jan. 16.
