GATINEAU – The grandmother of a teenage girl murdered in Gatineau nearly three years ago wants the Quebec provincial police to take over the case.
The badly burned body of 18-year-old Valerie Leblanc was discovered behind the Cegep de l’Outaouais on August 23, 2011.
The online petition, created by Huguette Leblanc and addressed to the Minister of Justice of Québec, asks that he consider taking the case from Gatineau Police and handing it over to Sûreté du Québec.
She feels that Gatineau Police does not have the experience or resources for the case and that their lack of communication with the family is frustrating.
Leblanc says she got the idea for the petition after she saw the provincial police take on the double murder case of Aylmer couple, Amanda Trottier and Travis Votour.
Gatineau Police have responded to the Leblanc family’s petition saying that they understand the frustration but they do have the expertise to handle the case and they are working with Sûreté du Québec.
As of Tuesday morning there were more than 700 signatures on the petition.
