By Mike Vlasveld

The Ottawa Police Service is thanking the public for its assistance in identifying a suspect in a theft at the Rideau Centre.

Investigators say a man picked a Nike track suit off a rack at a store in the mall on April 13, around 3:20 p.m., and tried to leave.

When he was approached by a security guard about not paying for the suit, the man pulled a yellow box cutter from his pocket and extended the blade. He then left the store on foot.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Calvin Phomin, 25 years old of Ottawa, is facing charges of:

  • Robbery with an offensive weapon (2 counts)
  • Weapons dangerous
  • Carrying a concealed weapon

Phomin is expected in court Friday afternoon.
