Ottawa’s Rideau Bakery shuts down after almost 90 years

By Jason White

An iconic bakery in the capital, with a history that stretches back to the Great Depression, has closed its doors for the last time.

Rideau Bakery has shut down, permanently. A subtle notice on its website thanks customers for their business.

The third generation of a Kardish family was running the bakery before its closure. It began operations at Rideau and Nelson streets, in 1930. A second location, on Bank Street, opened in the 1970s.

Customers have taken to social media to express their sadness over the loss of the bakery and its products.
