Ottawa ice sculptor takes top prize at Winterlude 2021

Antonio Baisas is the top ice sculptor at this year's Winterlude festival, for his work titled 'Pit Stop.'

Canadian Heritage says the Ottawa man's sculpture depicts “two lifelong friends, a boy and a reindeer, resting after a long journey in a snowy wonder.”

This year's competition featured seven ice sculptors from across Canada. From January 8 to 10, the seven had 28 hours to turn eight blocks of ice into works of art, based on the theme “Winter fun.” 

Canadians were then asked to vote online, choosing their three favourite works, based on: overall impression; concept, creativity and originality; quality of technical work; and attention to detail. 

Festival organizers say more than 30,000 votes were cast online.

Ross Baisas' 'Adrenaline Rush' took second place, while 'Surfing the North' by Halifax's Joel Palmer came in third.

This year's ice sculptures are still available to be viewed online.
