Ottawa breaks single-day COVID-19 case count record yet again; hospitalizations at all time high

For the third day in a row, Ottawa has broken its single-day COVID-19 case count with 370 new reported cases, while also recording a continued spike in hospitalizations.

This new case count reported by Ottawa Public Health on Sunday comes after Saturday’s record-breaking 325, and Friday’s 242.

This means the city represents over eight per cent of the cases reported in the province (4,456) on Sunday.

Ottawa’s total number of confirmed cases is now at 19,725.

The incidence rate has since climbed to 154.7 per 100,000, up from the 146 reported yesterday.

“Ottawa, today we are reporting 370 more people testing positive for COVID-19,” OPH's Dr. Vera Etches said in a tweet. “I am urging everyone to stay home. If you must go out for essential purposes wear a mask and keep 2M distance. We must lower the curve together.”

The positivity rate remains unchanged at 9.2 per cent.

Eight more people are in hospital with the virus, bringing the current total to 81 — the highest ever recorded in Ottawa.

ICUs have added two more patients, bringing the number of people in the unit to 26.

No new deaths have been recorded, however, keeping the local death toll at 475.

Active cases are currently at 2,411, however, resolved cases are at 16,839 — meaning 159 cases have cleared since Saturday.

Four new outbreaks have been declared in childcare centres and schools, bringing the total of ongoing outbreaks to 17.

Three new outbreaks have been reported in the community, which means there are now 15 ongoing outbreaks.

Healthcare institutions have reported two more outbreaks, as well, bringing the number of ongoing outbreaks to 19.

The provincial government has recorded 386,608 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Of the new cases, 190 are among kids ages nine to 13; 185 are among teens ages 14 to 17; and 168 are among children ages four to eight.

Twenty-one new deaths have also been reported, bringing the death toll to 7,552.

However, since Saturday, 2,617 more cases have resolved. The current number of cleared cases now stands at 346,239.

There are 1,524 patients in hospital with the virus — that’s 32 more than Saturday.

There are also 33 more patients in the ICU with COVID-19 — bringing the current total to 585 — with 25 more people on a ventilator (now at 384).

The Ontario government reports completing 61,439 tests since yesterday, which means that 6.5 per cent of cases tested positive with the virus on Sunday.

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit is reporting a spike in new cases since Saturday — 53, compared to yesterday’s 23.

The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has almost doubled its daily case count with 22 more people testing positive for the virus — up from yesterday’s 12.

However, the Renfrew County and District Health Unit experienced a dip in its numbers and only recorded two new cases — down from Saturday’s nine.
