The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is investigating possible links between a fatal collision about an hour north of Gatineau and a homicide about another half hour up Route 105.
Police say the crash in Kazabazua and murder in Kitigan-Zibi, both happened on Sunday, July 11, 2021.
Kitigan-Zibi police were originally called to the scene of a vehicle mischief incident around 11:30 p.m., but when they arrived on the scene, they found neither the suspect nor the vehicle. Instead, police found the body of 44-year-old Shannon Ferguson, who was unconscious with visible signs of assault. She was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Around 15 minutes after responding, the SQ was called to the scene of a head on collision on Route 105, near kilometre marker 211.
''From what we can understand, a vehicle crossed over into the oncoming lane and hit a truck travelling in the opposite direction,” Tessier says. “The teen that was driving the vehicle was brought to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
Tessier says it was the vehicle that kicked off the investigation, because it was the same one that was missing from the scene in Kitigan-Zibi.
“The car that was used by the teen involved in the crash belonged to [Shannon Ferguson], so that's why we think the two incidents are related,” he says.
The SQ sergeant says the name of the teen driver will not be released.
The Sûreté is continuing its investigation to determine the cause of death in both incidents and what lead to them.
