NCC, Carleton University working to ensure longer Rideau Canal Skateway seasons

As climate change continues to shorten Ottawa's winters, the National Capital Commission (NCC) is announcing a partnership with Carleton University, aimed at finding solutions to ensure the long-term viability of the Rideau Canal Skateway.
The NCC says it's looking to identify strategies to adapt skateway operations to the impacts of climate change.
Over a four-year period, starting this winter, the commission says data will be collected and a variety of pilot projects will be explored.
Crews will be testing different approaches, such as early ice flooding and the use of slush cannons, which could help ensure longer skateway seasons.
This season, probes will be deployed along the canal, and placed under the ice to help identify areas that are more difficult to maintain. By monitoring weather, as well as the water temperature and composition, and debris, the NCC says these unique data points and findings will allow it to be an industry leader in potential adaptation strategies.
The Rideau Canal Skateway is set to open to the public for its 52nd season on Friday, January 14, 2022.
