Queensway Carleton Hospital (QCH) is the first of Ottawa's healthcare centres to confirm it's received a shipment of the newly Heath Canada-approved COVID-19 fighting drug Paxlovid.
Health Canada authorized the first at-home, oral treatment for COVID-19 on Monday, January 17.
QCH says its pharmacy team is working with other hospitals in the region to get ready, so that all eligible patients can start to receive Paxlovid starting as soon as next week.
Ontario Minister of Health Christine Elliott tweeted Friday morning that the government had started distributing Paxlovid and that it had also secured some for First Nations communities in the north.
Good news! Ontario’s first shipment of Paxlovid has arrived and is being distributed to sites. We've also secured an additional 400 courses for First Nations communities in the north.
This is an important tool to help reduce #COVID19 hospitalizations for high-risk Ontarians.
