Large police presence expected in ByWard Market, Sandy Hill areas leading up to St. Patrick’s Day

By CityNews Ottawa

A “large and sustained” police presence can be expected in the ByWard Market and Sandy Hill areas over the next few weekends, leading up to St. Patrick's Day festivities.

In an announcement issued on Wednesday, March 9, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said they will be working alongside Ottawa Bylaw and the Alcohol Gaming Commission of Ontario to monitor activities related to the Irish holiday.

Officers will be present to ensure safe and law-abiding behaviour, focusing on liquor licence offences and general conduct issues.

“There will be strict enforcement this weekend,” OPS said in the statement. “People in the area may have already seen police and/or bylaw enforcement officers contacting local residents and students in advance of any festivities.”

If property owners wish, they can grant police “agent status” in advance to enable officers to enforce the Trespass to Property Act if partygoers spill onto their private property.

St. Patrick's Day this year falls on Thursday, March 17, just days prior to provincial mask mandates lifting on Monday, March 21.

Police also ask party go-ers to plan ahead and drive sober.

If you spot an impaired driver, call 911.
