The CAA’s annual Worst Roads campaign launches Tuesday.
Drivers are invited to vote in the annual poll and tell the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) which local thoroughfares are most in need of repair.
The CAA says the initiative is not only aimed at drivers, with cyclists, transit riders, and pedestrians encouraged to make submissions as well.
“We also are seeing an increase in people who are reporting poor cycling and pedestrian infrastructure,” says spokesperson Teresa Di Felice.
Nominations can be made online until Apr. 21. The results will be revealed on May 30.
Last year, the worst road in Ontario was Barton Street East in Hamilton. Two Ottawa streets cracked the top 10, including Carling Avenue, which came in at number five.
Ontario’s top 10 worst roads for 2022
- Barton Street East, Hamilton
- Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto
- Barker Street, Prince Edward County
- County Road 49, Prince Edward County
- Carling Avenue, Ottawa
- Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto
- Lake Shore Boulevard East, Toronto
- Finch Avenue West, Toronto
- Bronson Avenue, Ottawa
- Queen Street, Kingston
The program has sparked accelerated upgrades to some notorious roads over the last 20 years. The number one spot in 2021, Victoria Road in Prince Edward County, completely dropped off the list the following year.
“These votes have helped inform various levels of government with an informed perspective on what roadway improvements are most important to Ontarians,” says Di Felice. “For many road users, it can be difficult to engage with local government officials.”
