SIU investigating after Ottawa police officer shoots at driver of stolen vehicle

Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has launched an investigation after an Ottawa police officer fired at the driver of stolen car in an incident in the nation’s capital over the weekend.

The incident took place on Saturday, Dec. 16 just before 11:20 p.m. in Ottawa’s Overbrook area.

Ottawa police were attempting to a stop a vehicle in the 200 block of Donald Street when the driver reversed and struck a police officer. Another police officer with the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) fired his firearm at the car.

The driver of the stolen vehicle struck a cruiser before abandoning the vehicle a short distance away on McArthur Avenue and fled on foot.

There were no serious injuries reported to the officer who was struck.
