Firefighters spend close to five hours battling garage fire near Dunrobin

Ottawa fire crews had to contend with a lack of hydrants and a propane hazard while tackling a fire near Dunrobin.

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) responded to 2979 Dunrobin Road around 5:10 p.m. on Monday after several 9-1-1 callers reported a fire in a detached garage.

According to OFS, a former food truck and propane tanks inside the garage were as risk of catching fire as well a coverall fabric building used to store large bundles of hay.

Firefighters set up a water shuttle using tanker trucks from a close-by water source, as there are no hydrants in that area of the city.

The food truck and the coverall eventually caught fire, along with some of the grass in the area, and an excavator was brought to scene to pull the hay bundles apart so crews could extinguish all hot spots.

The fire was declared under control just before 10 p.m. as removing and opening up the hay took crews several hours.

By about 11:55 p.m., about 90 per cent of the hay had been removed from the barn and the hot spots were extinguished.

Firefighters assessed and treated the property owner for minor burns to their hands.

A fire investigator has been dispatched to the scene.
