Officials ‘hold out hope’ for missing woman in Ottawa River search

Multiple emergency responders continue to search for a missing woman in the Ottawa River near Pembroke.

According to Upper Ottawa Valley (UOV) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), two people had gone out in a tandem kayak near the Highway 148 bridge and Allumette Island Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The vessel capsized and a resident of the area heard calls for help just before 5 a.m. Wednesday morning. The resident called OPP and set out to find the people in distress.

A 34-year-old man was rescued by the citizen and an OPP officer, but a 30-year-old woman remains missing.

“We continue to hold out hope this individual made it to shore and will be located alive,” Bill Dickson, OPP media relations officer told CityNews.

Police say all available resources including the OPP aviation and emergency response team and the underwater search and recovery unit are on scene.

Members of the UOV OPP Emergency Response Team, multiple marine units, Sûreté du Québec, the Pembroke Fire Department and County of Renfrew Paramedics responded to the scene.
