Police use tire deflation tool to stop stolen vehicle on Hwy. 417

A 16-year-old female was arrested and charged by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) after officers from the Hawkesbury detachment tracked down a stolen vehicle.
Early Thursday around 5:00 a.m., police attempted to stop a stolen vehicle headed eastbound on Highway 417. The driver refused and police used a tire deflation device to stop the vehicle. The tool has been in use for more than 25 years and is deployed with hollow spikes so the tire deflates slowly before the vehicle is stopped.
“Officers must consider, prior to stopping a vehicle or after a vehicle fails to stop for police, what the most appropriate action is,” Bill Dickson, media relations officer with OPP said. “Several alternatives are available for the officer at the time and the Tire Deflation Device is one of them. It can be utilized to prevent or terminate a vehicle pursuit.”
As a result the teenage driver from Montreal was charged with:
- Possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000 – in Canada
- Theft of motor vehicle
- Flight from peace officer
- Drive motor vehicle – no licence
She will not be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act and is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 12.
