10 people displaced after two-alarm fire in Ottawa’s east end

After several blazes on Tuesday, Ottawa firefighters were called to the city’s east end to battle a two-alarm incident.

Callers at 11:53 a.m. reported heavy black smoke and flames coming from the back of a townhome in the 2000 block of Ogilvie Road in the Beacon Hill community. Crews arrived on scene within four minutes and saw flames coming through the roof and two units ablaze.

A hose was on the fire within minutes, but the flames had already spread through the first and second floors of the home, and were travelling to the attached unit.

This was when crews called for backup at around noon.

By 12:24 p.m. firefighters searched both units and confirmed no people were inside. Crews had to pull the ceilings from the top floors of both units to extinguish the flames that had blackened both attics.

Over two hours later, officials were able to declare the fire under control at 2:15 p.m.

Although there are no injuries, a total of 10 people will be displaced.

Beacon Hill-Cyrville Councillor Tim Tierney thanked firefighters in a post on X saying that him and Fire Chief Paul Hutt are speaking to residents about the incident.

“Our wonderful community is already stepping up to help them find accommodations for the evening until insurance can assist with their next steps,” the councillor noted.

This is the fourth fire on Tuesday crews have faced, after an early morning fire in Greenboro, a barn fire near the Pakenham border and a high-rise blaze in Vanier.
