Salt truck driver charged after officer finds ‘litany’ of issues

Officers from the Ottawa police traffic unit are trained to inspect commercial vehicles for any issues.

That knowledge was put to use on Monday as police pulled over, what appears to be, a salt truck in the city.

Police said in a post on X that the vehicle had a “litany of issues” related to road readiness and that it was posing a potential risk to other people on the streets.

According to police they charged the driver with:

  • No annual inspection
  • Plow permit
  • Pre-trip inspection
  • Uncovered load
  • Obstructed plate
  • Oversized plow
  • Over-weight by 2,701 kg

Officials said that the rear tires of the vehicle each had a maximum carrying weight of 1,450 kg and both were carrying well above the limits.

The vehicle was taken out of service for the weight on all the tires and the driver/company faces $1,500 in fines.
