Ottawa firefighters were called to a house blaze last night where they needed to help two people escape while thick snowflakes fell and smoke filled the air.
The incident is one of 12 fires crews have tackled over the last six days in the city.
It started with multiple calls to the department at 9:40 p.m. where people reported “heavy black smoke” coming from a single-detached house that was divided into four apartments.
Officials went to the 300 block of Bronson Avenue three minutes after being dispatched and met people outside who said there was a fire on the second floor.
Crews began a fast attack with a hose line inside the structure. A separate group went to search the remaining apartments for more residents.
Firefighters needed to help two people out of the building and create a medical area outside the home to treat them for smoke inhalation. Officials gave the two people oxygen and used blankets to keep them warm.
Inside the home, firefighters found two e-bikes that were ablaze and reported the flames had spread throughout the area. Crews brought the e-bikes outside and pulled down parts of the ceiling to extinguish embers found inside.
It was declared under control by 10:21 p.m.

Roughly at the same time crews were tackling the blaze on Bronson Avenue they were called for a garage fire just east of downtown.
This incident started at 9:48 p.m. in the 900 block of Shefford Road in the Beacon Hill South community.
When they got there, firefighters could see flames coming from the front of the detached double garage. The resident of the home told them there was no one else inside.
Forcing the side door to the garage open, officials were met with “heavy flames” inside which had spread to the ceiling and the loft over the structure.
Using a hose, crews were able to contain the flames to just the garage before they were extinguished at 10:36 p.m. Firefighters tried to remove the owner’s tools and equipment and put tarps over things before dousing the flames.
In both incidents, a fire investigator was dispatched.
