Two people facing $615 tickets for passing police while on their phones

Two drivers were issued hefty fines and driving suspensions after passing police officers while on their phones.

It happened this afternoon, during a slow down on Highway 417 due to a dump truck that lost its load and caused damage to the Lees Avenue overpass.

Officers were in the area due to the incident and then also saw two separate drivers pass them on their phones. Officers said they issued a $615 ticket to both drivers and they face a three-day driving suspension upon conviction.

In recent months, police have noted several egregious instances of people using their phones while driving. In one situation, late February, a driver on Highway 417 was seen watching TikToks while driving.

An early morning enforcement blitz that took place on Feb. 6, a total of 16 drivers were charged with distracted driving, including one who was watching TV in traffic.

OPP are warning against distracted driving, reminding drivers that there will be harsh consequences.

“It is a law for a reason,” the force said. “Help us keep Ontario roads safe – put the phone away.”
