The resident of a home in Constance Bay awoke to the sound of fire alarms, which allowed them to escape the fully engulfed blaze with minor burns.
Firefighters were called at 12:33 a.m. on Friday to the northwest portion of the city for flames that were seen by a 911 caller coming from a bungalow. According to officials the person in the home went to a neighbours house to call the department.
At this point, the home was fully engulfed in flames. Crews went to the 600 block of Bayview Drive and when they arrived also noted several trees surrounding the home were ablaze as well. Due to the large footprint of the fire, crews were not able to enter the home, having to attack flames from the outside.
Multiple hose lines were used and water was brought in through a tanker system because no fire hydrants are in this part of the city.
The resident of the home told firefighters they were able to escape because of the working smoke alarm. They heard the alarm and left with only minor burns to their arms.
Those injuries were treated by teams before paramedics arrived.
The blaze was declared under control by 1:29 a.m. A firefighter sustained a minor injury during the situation.
A fire investigator is looking into the cause of the blaze.
