Charges laid after package of heroin arrives from Italy

A 47-year-old Ottawa resident was arrested and faces drug-related charges following after a package containing heroin arrived from Italy.

On May 8, the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) conducted a secondary inspection of a package arriving at the Ottawa International Airport. Testing concluded the contents was heroin.

The CBSA requested assistance from the OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) and an investigation was opened.

On May 20, the joint investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant at a residence on Red Castle Ride in the Manotick area. One person was arrested at the scene.

Harvinder Singh Malhi of Ottawa has been charged under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act with:

  • Import Schedule 1 Substance – Heroin; and
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of Trafficking – Other Drugs.

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on June 24.
