uOttawa unveils expansion of Kanata North campus

Monday morning will officially unveil the expansion of the University of Ottawa’s Kanata North Campus housed within Canada’s largest tech park.

Just six years old, the satellite campus of one of Canada’s capital universities has made great headway. Within two years of opening, the campus had doubled in size. In 2021 the university launched the Smart Connected Vehicle Innovation Centre and the following year it opened Hub350.

The tech park is home to over 540 businesses, primarily in the tech sector. The university’s growing presence in the park has led to greater opportunities for students and staff to collaborate on groundbreaking tech innovation in eastern Ontario.

Monday’s event marks the launch of the SITE-CAV (Secure, Intelligent, and Trustworthy Ecosystem for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles) at the Smart Connected Vehicle Innovation Centre. SITE-CAV is a large-scale research project led by professor Burak Kantarci of the Faculty of Engineering focusing on advancing research in intelligent transportation and autonomous vehicles.

The SITE-CAV project is partially funded through a $1 million investment from the Research Excellence program through the Ontario Research Fund. An additional $2.5 million in funding will come from industry partners over a four-year period.

“The uOttawa Kanata North campus provides a unique environment to support research and innovation while enabling access to the critically needed talent to Canada’s largest tech park,” Julie St-Pierre, Interim Vice-President, Research and Innovation, says on the campus’ website.

Members of the public are invited to join the ceremony celebrating the expansion beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at 350 Legget Drive. The ceremony will be followed by a tour of the premises.
