30-50 millimetres of rain possible in Ottawa

It will be a wet and rainy evening for people kicking off the (kind of) long weekend in the nation’s capital.

Environment Canada is calling for 30 to 50 millimetres of rain possible starting Friday afternoon and overnight. The weather agency said heavy showers and possible thunderstorms are expected, due to a low pressure system moving into the region.

“Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads,” it said. “Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.”

Temperatures are hovering around normal at 25 C, with a humidex it feels like 27 C. Overnight, it is expected to drop to 17 C.

Saturday there are risks of thunderstorms in the morning, with the humidity increasing temperatures to 34 C. It is expected to be a cloudy day for both June 28 and 29.

It’s not really a long weekend for many, unless they took Monday off, because Canada Day falls on a Tuesday this year. However, for those enjoying a long weekend, June 30 is expected to be sunny with a few clouds and a high of 31 C.

The Environment Canada long-range forecast shows rain could be coming on July 1.
