Rain won’t put a damper on Canada Day weekend activities in Ottawa

It is a wet and gloomy start to the weekend for those in Ottawa. As many settle in to begin Canada Day celebrations and relax on a (kind of) long weekend, there is a storm brewing that could put a damper on any outdoor plans.

Environment Canada says there is a 60 per cent chance of showers Saturday with the risk of thunderstorms forming in the afternoon.

Temperatures remain above seasonal with a high of 26 C and a humidex making it feel more like 35 C.

The rain is expected to continue into the evening, stopping overnight.

The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario has made the call to cancel its annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic in response to the unpredictable weather. The event, which provides family fun in support of CHEO charities was supposed to be held Satrday.

If you’re looking for other things to do this weekend, there is a myriad of events going on in the capital celebrating the beginning of summer.

The Ottawa Jazz Festival kicked off Friday and will continue to host several concerts at Confederation Park, Marion Dewar Plaza and the National Arts Centre throughout the weekend.

The Ottawa Titans will face off in games two and three against the New Jersey Jackals Saturday and Sunday. The Titans swept game one 7-3 on Friday.

It is a weekend filled with sporting events with the Ottawa BlackJacks hosting the Montreal Alliance Saturday afternoon and the Redblacks taking the field at TD place with the Toronto Argos on Sunday.

If you’re looking for something to do with the kids, the Kanata Fun Fair is on until July 1. Admission is free and ride tickets can be at the site.

June 28 to July 6 is also National Fishing Week. Anyone in Ontario can fish this week without a license provided they follow the current Ontario Recreational Fishing Regulations Summary for limits and fees.
