The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in the nation’s capital after a single-vehicle collision on July 3.
The police watchdog opened the case after an interaction between the suspect car, speeding down Highway 417 crashed and two people were sent to hospital. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said in a press release that the incident started just after 6:00 p.m. on Thursday while officers were on a general patrol. They saw a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed.
The SIU said in a press release that the officers tried to stop the driver of the black car. The vehicle went into a pole on Star Top Road in the city’s east end. The incident sent the two people, a 35-year-old male driver and a 22-year-old female passenger, in the vehicle to hospital and prompted a several-hour closure.
The man remains in hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
OPP launched an investigation into the collision and notified the SIU. The watchdog is involved in Ontario policing matters when a person is seriously injured or killed during an interaction with police.
