Police in Ottawa attended several car meets over the last several weeks to keep an eye on things and to conduct enforcement.
Officers said several people gathered in known car meet spots in Orléans, Gloucester and Trainyards in the city’s east end. Previously, police have described these situations as a “large unauthorized organized car meet.”
In the most recent instances, officials from the Residents Matters Enforcement group laid many charges to several drivers attending the meet, including:
- 7 counts for speeding
- 1 count of red light – fail to stop
- 2 counts for no current valid permit
- 1 for obstruct plate
- 1 count of fail to surrender licence
- 1 count of fail to display two plates
Officers caught a vehicle going well above the speed limit, and for the second time, the man was charged with stunt driving. Police said they clocked the vehicle travelling 117 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
Police also noted that one driver blew a “warn” on a screening device and was issued a seven-day licence suspension as a result.
Not the first enforcement of car meets
This comes months after Ottawa police laid numerous charges and stopped several people in a one-night car meet operation in April.
Officials said in a press release they conducted an enforcement blitz on April 4 in the West Hunt Club Road, Barrhaven and Riverside South areas in response to the “large” meet.
Police said that they laid a number of charges in relation and caught several drivers speeding well above the limit.
“While we can’t be everywhere, we could be anywhere,” Cst. Phil Kane, with Ottawa police’s traffic escort and enforcement unit, said. “Ottawa Police, along with OPP and RCMP, will continue targeting irresponsible and dangerous driving.”
Some of the other charges were:
- 12 for speeding
- 4 for improper mufflers
- 4 for tinted windows
- 4 for failing to surrender insurance
- 4 for obstructed licence plates
- 3 for unnecessary noise
- 3 for using a handheld communication device
- 3 for failing to stop at a red light
- 3 for driving without a licence (unlicenced)
