Two people were rescued from a small airplane that crashed in a tree near Ottawa International Airport on Thursday afternoon, with crews still working hours later to extract a third person.
The plane crashed west of the airport shortly before 6 p.m.
Nic Defalco, a spokesperson for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, told reporters at the scene that the aircraft was on “forced approach” to the airport but hit power lines as it was coming in.
“Investigators are on-site, they’ll be interviewing witnesses, examining the site and looking at the wreckage to see what they gather tonight,” Defalco said.
A man and a woman were taken to hospital in stable condition.
Officials did not provide details about the condition of the plane’s other occupant.
Krista Kealey, a spokesperson for the Ottawa International Airport Authority, said the airport’s fire service responded to the crash along with city firefighters.
Kealey added that airport operations were not affected.
The Transportation Safety Board said the aircraft was a privately registered Grumman AA-5A.
