Teen G2 driver among those nabbed for stunt driving recently

Police are trying to crack down on the number of drivers using the nation’s capital as a racetrack.

On Aug. 28, officers with the traffic escort and enforcement unit caught a young driver going well above the speed limit on Hawthorne Road in the city’s south end.

According to information from police, the 18-year-old G2 driver was travelling 136 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, in rainy conditions. Officials said they believe a “family conversation” would be happening with the teen who was charged with stunt driving, resulting in the SUV’s impound.

This is one of several other speeders police have nabbed in the last few days.

On Friday morning, police said a white truck approached an unmarked cruiser from behind going 139 km/h in the 80 km/h zone along Highway 174. According to officers, the driver went as fast as 146 km/h. This person had their licence suspended and received a court date for themselves and the company they work for.

Just two days before, officers caught a 68-year-old travelling on Limebank Road near Balmoral. They were going 154 km/h along the 80 km/h roadway.

Upcoming long weekend enforcement

Police across the province are preparing for a busy Labour Day weekend on the roads and are reminding people to arrive safely by following the laws.

According to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), 214 people have died on highways across the province, with a majority of the deaths preventable.

Officials are asking people to never drive impaired, always use seatbelts and to not speed, as “these remain the leading causes or contributing factors in road deaths year after year. “

There will be an increased police presence across all roads and lakes in Ontario.
