Cyclist injured after struck by e-cyclist fleeing police; SIU investigates

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating after an e-cyclist, being pursued by police, struck another cyclist.

It happened on the evening of Aug. 7, shortly after 8:15 p.m. Investigators say an Ottawa police officer in a marked cruiser attempted to stop two men riding e-bikes at high speeds in the area of Carling Avenue and Moodie Drive.

Officials say the two men fled on a bike path adjacent to the road when one hit another cyclist.

The cyclist who was struck, a 28-year-old, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The SIU says it was notified of the incident on Aug. 22 and has since opened its investigation. The SIU invokes its mandate to investigate in any instance where the conduct of police results in injury or death.

The unit says one subject official and two witness officials have been designated at this time.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
