Police lay charges in unprovoked assault of woman in downtown

Charges have been laid in a case that saw a woman accosted near a downtown Ottawa intersection in early August.

Police said in a press release that they have charged a 34-year-old man after an incident on Aug. 7 around 7:46 a.m. Officers responded to a call for an unprovoked assault in the Kent and Nepean streets area.

According to the press release, during the incident, the suspect approached the female victim and made threats and accosted her. At the time, police arrested the suspect on scene and later charged him with uttering threats and assault.

The female victim and suspect were not known to each other, police said.

The woman was offered community supports after the incident.

The investigation has concluded, but anyone with additional information is asked to contact the OPS Hate and Bias Crime Unit at 613-236-1222, ext. 5015.
