Ottawa police warn of new type of distraction theft with over 50 reports

Ottawa police are asking people in the nation’s capital to be vigilant when it comes to allowing people in their personal space.

According to officers, there is a new type of distraction theft going around the community, with the majority of targets being older adults. In these thefts, the person is approached by the suspect and is asked for directions. After the interaction, the suspects get close and place a necklace around the victim’s neck as a “thank you gift,” police explain.

In this process, the suspects are able to remove the victim’s jewellery. This sort of incident has happened 50 times, according to data shared by the force, 20 of which happened between April 1 and Sept. 2. Overall, there have been 70 reports of distraction thefts in the city this year.

Thieves may be targeting jewellery but phones, wallets and purses are also at risk, the release reads.

Ways to protect people:

  • Avoid displaying expensive or sentimental jewellery in public; keep it covered when possible
  • Stay alert to your surroundings, especially in parking lots and less busy areas
  • Do not allow strangers to invade your personal space or touch you — if someone tries to place an object on you, it’s a red flag
  • If approached by a stranger under suspicious circumstances, walk away and seek help if needed

Police are asking people to report incidents. They ask that if you are a victim and the suspect is nearby, to not follow them but call 911. They are asking people to do their best to remember as many details as possible about the suspects physical description.
