Ottawa Public Health warns of measles exposure at two church locations

While the measles outbreak may officially be over, that declaration does not guarantee people will not be exposed to the infection.

Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is cautioning anyone who visited two churches that could have been exposed to the virus.

Officials say exposure may have occurred at St. Clement Parish at Saint Anne Church located at 528 Old St. Patrick St. on Sunday, Oct. 12, between 10:20 a.m. and 2 p.m. A similar caution was put out for those who attended St. George’s Parish located at 415 Piccadilly Ave. between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. between Monday, Sept. 29 and Thursday, Oct. 2.

The health agency says it is investigating a cluster of five cases related to these locations.

“OPH is directly notifying individuals who may have been exposed to the measles virus, where contact information is available,” the public health agency said on its website. “This public service announcement is intended to reach individuals who may have been exposed but could not be reached directly or whose contact information was incomplete or unavailable.”

Anyone who visited the two locations at the above times should monitor for symptoms for 21 days. Symptoms of a measles infection include high fever, cough, runny nose, white spots in the mouth, and red watery eyes. A few days after symptoms present, a red rash usually develops on the face and spreads down the body. Those who experience symptoms is urged to call their healthcare provider.

On Oct. 6, Ontario officially declared the province’s measles outbreak over. That outbreak began almost a year prior to exposure to a travel-related case in New Brunswick led to measles cases in Ontario.

Public Health Ontario reported 2,375 measles cases associated with the outbreak, with cases occurring in 26 public health jurisdictions. Between Jan. 1 and Oct. 14, there were also 47 cases not related to the outbreak.

Ottawa Public Health has reported 10 cases of measles in 2025. Three of these cases were connected to the outbreak.
