Impaired driving charges laid in late-night Hwy. 416 crash

Emergency responders closed a portion of Highway 416 for several hours on Monday evening after a collision involving a construction vehicle.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) said that officers with the Grenville detachment were sent to a crash just after 9:00 p.m. on Oct. 27 in the southbound lanes of the highway near Rideau River. When they arrived, they saw a pick-up truck had collided with a parked construction vehicle called a “crash-truck.” It provides a barrier between fast-moving traffic and workers on highways.

North Grenville firefighters and Leeds-Grenville paramedics responded to the situation.

The driver of the pick-up truck was sent to hospital as a precaution and paramedics also checked on the driver of the construction vehicle, but no serious injuries were reported.

OPP is laying charges against the truck driver, Cole Ramsay, 24, of Iroquois.

His offences include:

  • Dangerous operation
  • Operation while impaired – alcohol
  • Operation while impaired-blood concentration (80 plus)
  • Driving a vehicle with liquor readily available
  • Driving a vehicle with an open container of liquor

Ramsay was released from custody and is set to appear in court in November. His licence was suspended and vehicle impounded.

This is the second collision involving a crash truck on an Ottawa-area highway in the last month.

On Sept. 30, officers responded to a crash just after 8:30 a.m.in the westbound lanes near Panmure Road in west Ottawa.

A vehicle crashed into the back of the protective vehicle causing minor injuries to its driver.

The person who struck the truck was charged with careless driving and faces a $490 fine and three demerit points, provincial police said. They also suffered minor injuries in the incident.

“Once again, the OPP reminds motorists to drive with extra caution in construction zones,” officials said.
