Police seize 25,000 unmarked cigarettes in Byward Market

One woman is facing charges under the Criminal Code of Canada after police seized approximately 25,000 unmarked cigarettes.

Police say the OPS Central Neighbourhood Resource Team (NRT) was conducting Tobacco Tax Act enforcement in the 100 block of Rideau St. in the Byward Market on Oct. 29. During this time, officers came across a woman allegedly selling unmarked cigarettes. Police say she had approximately 25,000 in her possession as well as a quantity of Canadian currency.

Police say the same woman, 58, has been involved in previous enforcement action regarding unmarked cigarettes. She is now facing charges.

The Ministry of Finance was also engaged in the investigation which has now concluded.

The Central NRT says it has seized approximately 90,000 unmarked cigarettes in total.
