Provincial police laid charges against a woman after a collision on Highway 417, where the vehicle crashed, then swerved into traffic.
Officers said the incident happened Nov. 17, just before 11:30 p.m. Police said callers watched a vehicle crash into the centre barrier on Highway 417 and then continue to drive while the airbags were deployed.
A video shared by Ontario Provincial Police shows a car driving next to the barrier before side-swiping it and losing control, skidding into lanes of oncoming traffic, before smashing into the barrier on the off-ramp to Carling Avenue. After a moment, it reverses and continues westbound while other witness vehicles around avoid the car.
Officials said they later found the vehicle with the suspected driver under the influence of alcohol. The driver refused to give a breath sample.
As a result, Claudia Castellanos Munoz, 28, faces the following charges:
- Operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Failure or refusal to comply with demand
- Dangerous operation
- Assault peace officer
- Fail to remain
- Fail to report accident
- Operate unsafe vehicle
The accused had her licence suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for a week. She’s set to appear in an Ottawa court at a later date.
“The OPP would like to thank members of the public who continue to report suspected impaired drivers,” police said in a press release.
