6 drivers fined after driving on portion of closed highway

Six drivers are facing charges under the Highway Traffic Act after driving on a portion of Highway 31 that was closed.

The road was closed south of Hwy 18 in South Dundas Friday night following a collision between a tractor-trailer and another vehicle. Police say one person was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

OPP say the collision was serious and the road was closed for several hours.

“For over 3 hours, drivers followed the posted closure signs and barricades,” OPP said in a post on X. “Unfortunately, around 6:30 p.m., one driver chose to ignore the barricades, drove through the collision scene, and made a U-turn when they saw officers.”

Officials say several other vehicles followed, with one person moving pylons to get around the closure.

Six drivers were charged and now face a $110 fine and three demerit points.

OPP is reminding drivers to obey all road signs and barricades.

“Your patience can save lives,” it said.
