A child was sent to hospital after a driver failed to stop for a school bus in the Ottawa Valley on Tuesday.
Provincial police said the school bus was stopped on Highway 17 in Rolphton, Ont., northwest of Deep River. It happened around 4:30 p.m. when the 10-year-old was getting off the bus that was headed westbound. They were crossing when an eastbound car “failed to stop and struck the child,” the press release reads.
Officials said the child was not seriously hurt.
The bus had its red flashing light and stop arm out when the collision happened, police detailed.
The child was transported to hospital by Renfrew County Paramedics.
A 29-year-old man from Dorval, Que., was charged at the scene with careless driving causing bodily harm and failing to stop for a school bus with its lights activated.
The driver was released from custody and is expected to appear in court on Dec. 15.
Police are asking people to keep their eyes on the road.
“Thankfully, this child was not seriously hurt, but failing to stop for a stopped school bus can be deadly,” officers said.
