Ottawa police laid criminal charges after stopping a vehicle that was going 133 km/h over the speed limit on a rural south road.
Officers said they were out on Nov. 24 just as the afternoon rush was kicking off. They clocked a black Mercedes car travelling 213 km/h on Limebank Road, which has a limit of 80 km/h.
After stopping the vehicle, police said in a press release that officers spoke to the driver. In that interaction, police learned that they used to live in the city and were visiting. However, officers said that the person had several outstanding warrants.
As a result, the 22-year-old was arrested and held for a bail hearing.
He is facing a criminal charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and a Highway Traffic Act charge for stunt driving by 150 km/h or more.
The accused’s licence was suspended for 30 days, the rental vehicle was impounded for two weeks, and the driver can face a fine of up to $10,000 and six months in jail if convicted.
Following an undercover provincial police blitz that saw dozens of charges laid and several motorcycles seized, the Crown in Ottawa and police reached an agreement in September.
Police have consulted the Crown in Ottawa and agreed that, any speeds over 180 km/h, officers can lay a dangerous driving charge.
This is one tactic police are trying in order to curb the number of high-profile speeding incidents in the nation’s capital.
