Enforcement increased after skier posts video jumping over Rideau Canal

Parks Canada issued a warning and is increasing enforcement after a video circulating online shows someone ski jumping over the Rideau Canal National Historic Site in downtown Ottawa.

The video posted to Instagram by jetskis.xyz shows a skier picking up speed down a hill before hitting a ramp set up just before the canal lock, and in slow motion jumping over the ice and water. The skier barely makes the stunt by crashing into the side, losing both skis, and throwing themselves into the snow on the other side.

The government body which takes care of the locks along the Rideau River told CityNews in an email that it is aware of the video “showing unauthorized and unsafe activity.” This prompted the agency to put out the warning, saying that the locks can be unsafe.

“For public safety, activities such as walking, skating, downhill skiing, extreme sports, or ice bathing on the frozen or unfrozen waters of the Rideau Canal are prohibited, except in areas specifically managed for these activities, such as skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway, when open,” Parks Canada said.

The stations are closed to the public from October to May and are not maintained, meaning “conditions can be icy and unpredictable.”

Parks Canada notes that it has increased enforcement to protect both the public and the historic infrastructure of the canal. The agency has wardens who can enforce the Trespass to Property Act, which can fine people up to $10,000.

“Further measures such as signage and fencing are being explored,” the agency said.

CityNews reached out for comment to the skier in the video.
