Firefighters, who witnessed a two-vehicle crash, jump into action

An Ottawa fire heavy rescue truck was travelling through an intersection when crews witnessed a serious two-vehicle collision.

The team jumped into action needing to extricate one driver after the vehicle’s airbags deployed. It happened at Carling Avenue and Merivale Road around 2:40 p.m. on Thursday. The vehicle sustained “significant damage,” firefighters said.

One of the drivers was trapped, forcing more crews to the scene. Both drivers in the crash were assessed by teams, while another crew stabilized the vehicle with the trapped person and cut through it using extrication tools.

Just 10 minutes later, the person was out.

Paramedics told CityNews that they assessed one female patient in her 40s at the crash. She was in serious but stable condition on the way to hospital.

“It has been a busy start to the year, but Ottawa residents can be confident knowing their firefighters are always ready,” Nick DeFazio, public information officer with Ottawa fire said. “Continuous training ensures our crews are ready for any emergency, at any time, and that commitment shows in every response.”
