An early morning pursuit of a stolen Honda SUV ended with three people facing charges after a police take down that saw deflated tires and a crash with an officer’s cruiser in the west end.
Ottawa police said early Wednesday morning, around 2:00 a.m., they responded to a report of a vehicle theft in progress in the 1400 block of Richmond Road in the Lincoln Heights community. Officials said about 25 minutes later, officers saw the vehicle near Dumaurier Avenue, near Britannia Bay, and that’s when the motorist sped away from police.
Police didn’t follow the vehicle because of the speed and the icy road, the press release details.
At 2:27 a.m., more officers saw the vehicle near March Road (Eagleson Road exit) and Highway 417 in Kanata. They deployed a spike belt, deflating all four tires.
The vehicle continued onto the highway, drove about 2.5 kilometres, before exiting at Kanata Avenue, where it crashed “intentionally” into a police cruiser. No officers were injured in the incident.
Three people were arrested: a 28-year-old man, a 31-year-old woman, and a 42-year-old man, all from Ottawa.
They are facing a slew of charges:
- Theft of a motor vehicle
- Possession of stolen property
- Assault a peace officer
- Flight from a peace officer
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Obstruct/resist a peace officer
- Utter threats
- Mischief to property
- Breach of probation
The three accused appeared in court on Wednesday.
