The groundhogs in Canada might have been mistaken: freezing temperatures and snow are expected in Ottawa this weekend, according to the forecast.
Environment Canada is calling for a possible 5 to 10 centimetres of snow in the city overnight. Mixed with 50 km/h gusts, blowing snow across roadways is expected. With the wind, temperatures are going to plummet overnight.
The low is -18 C, the weather agency notes on Friday evening, but it’ll feel closer to -27.
The arctic air will stick around for Saturday morning, with the wind chill making it feel like -28. It warns that there will be a risk of frostbite.
As the snow disappears on Saturday, clouds should retreat, and the sun will come out.
By Sunday the high could be around -16 C, a bit of relief before temperatures drop overnight.
The public health agency says people should wear multiple layers of clothing, covering all exposed skin.
For those experiencing homelessness, there are several drop-in centres, emergency shelters and the Salvation Army’s 24/7 Outreach Van in the city.
People can call 311 to get help finding the best shelter or can call for others who need transportation out of the cold.
Ottawa also has a map of resources across the city of spaces where people are welcome to warm up.
