Impaired snowplow driver crashes into Ottawa police car

A snowplow driver is facing several severe charges after crashing into an Ottawa police cruiser while impaired.

According to officials, the collision happened on Rideau Street just after 4:00 a.m. on Saturday. The cruiser was on the street when a snowplow crashed into it.

Police said the driver was arrested and had a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit.

This is the fifth crash involving a snowplow in Ottawa this winter. It is the second case where the snowplow driver was arrested.

The first happened in the west end, around 7:00 p.m. Jan. 5 to Fernbank Road, a street partially located in Stittsville. A small SUV had crashed into the back of the stopped plow. The SUV driver was sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

However, officers arrested the plow driver for driving under suspension after they had been prohibited from driving for life. They were also arrested on an outstanding warrant with the Ontario Provincial Police.

This comes after a week in December when police were called to three separate instances of crashes between plows and vehicles.
