Dog successfully treated for smoke inhalation following house fire

Ottawa firefighters treated a dog for smoke inhalation following a fire that broke out Friday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Services said it received a call shortly after 3 p.m. from a resident reporting their single-family home was filling with smoke. The caller indicated they were home with their dog and were able to evacuate, but that the dog inhaled smoke.

Crews arrived on the scene in the 5600 block of Manotick Main Street and confirmed heavy smoke coming from the structure.

Responders immediately deployed an animal oxygen kit and began treating the dog while others initiated fire suppression efforts.

Ottawa police closed Manotick Main Street to allow crews to safely operate.

Visibility was low while a secondary crew advanced a hose line into the residence. Active flames were located in the basement and on the main level.

No other occupants were found inside.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire and the incident was declared under control shortly after 4 p.m.

Firefighters say the oxygen treatment for the dog was successful, and they were turned back over to the homeowner. The homeowner was assessed on scene by Ottawa Paramedics.

Crews soaked insulation and stored materials to prevent further fire spread. High-powered fans were used to ventilate smoke from the structure.

Two adults were displaced by the fire and are receiving assistance from Victim Services.

An Ottawa Fire Investigator was dispatched to determine the cause of the fire.
