19-year-old arrested in connection with Barrhaven crossing guard death

Ottawa police arrested a 19-year-old in connection with a hit-and-run investigation in Barrhaven.

Police confirmed on Tuesday a male crossing guard in his 50s died in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle on Monday morning in Barrhaven. The incident happened around 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of Cedarview Road near Kennevale Drive — there are three schools in the area.

Police said Tuesday afternoon a 19-year-old was arrested, after they put out pleas for the public’s help finding a dark-coloured Ford F-150 believed to be involved in the serious hit-and-run.

Officers did not detail any charges laid.

“The Ottawa Police Service extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Peter Clark, who tragically lost his life while serving as a school crossing guard,” the press release reads. “Mr. Clark’s commitment to that responsibility reflects a service to the community that deserves our utmost respect and gratitude. This is a heartbreaking loss, and our thoughts are with the school community and all those affected.”

Barrhaven West Councillor, David Hill, said Clark was his local Mary Honeywell Public School guard.

“He died in the service of his community,” Hill wrote on social media. “My sincere condolences go out to Peter’s family, friends, his colleagues at the Ottawa Safety Council and the families that he knew and protected day in and out.”

“I will share more information about how we as a community can commemorate Peter’s life once I have it,” Hill said. “We of course need to defer to the family as they process this tremendous grief. I am sorry to have to share this news.”

Ottawa mayor Mark Sutcliffe said flags at city buildings will be lowered to half-mast in honour of Clark.

“The loss of Peter Clark is being felt deeply across our city. This should never have happened to someone who was working to keep children safe. Flags at all City of Ottawa facilities will be lowered to half-mast until the day of his funeral in honour of Peter’s life and his service to our community.” Sutcliffe wrote in a post on social media.

Police continue to investigate and will provide additional updates when available.
