23-year-old from Ottawa facing gun charges after home, vehicle searches

The provincial police’s guns and gangs unit is laying multiple Criminal Code charges after seizing firearms from a 23-year-old.

In a press release, officers shared that search warrants took place at two homes and a vehicle in Ottawa’s south end on Riverside Drive and in Orléans on Willow Avenue. Multiple units from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were involved, including the auto theft and towing team and the Ottawa Police Service’s tactical unit.

As a result, police seized a 12-gauge double-barreled sawed-off shotgun, a 12-gauge shotgun, ammunition and a cell phone.

The accused, from the nation’s capital is facing charges of:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm- two counts

He was released from custody following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear in court on April 23.

According to statistics from the OPP, its firearms analysis and tracing enforcement program traces the majority (87 per cent) of guns officers seize from the U.S.
