Police investigating swatting call at Kanata high school after emailed threat

Officers are investigating at a Kanata high school after a swatting incident prompted an emergency response on Tuesday morning.

A spokesperson from the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) told CityNews in an email that “Swatting is a dangerous, illegal prank involving a false report to trigger a police response. At no time were students or staff at risk.”

A “small number” of staff and students received an email that contained a threat of violence, the statement reads. This led Ottawa police to the school, where investigators determined it was not credible.

“Although this was not a real threat, we take incidents like these very seriously. They require a coordinated emergency response and can be unsettling for those who receive or hear about the message,” the OCSB spokesperson said.

According to police, students and staff will see an increased presence at All Saints Catholic High School out of an abundance of caution.

“We are aware of a malicious alert launched against All Saints Secondary School in Kanata this morning,” police said in a brief statement. “Agents are active and conducting an investigation.”

Officers note that there is no known threat to students, staff or the school.

The school is reminding students of the importance of creating strong passwords for online accounts.
