A man from Kemptville is facing charges after provincial police came to assist him on Highway 417.
Police said the 59-year-old called to ask for traffic control help, telling officers his vehicle had broken down on the highway near Vanier on Wednesday evening.
When police arrived, they found the front windshield of the vehicle severely damaged.
“What he neglected to mention was that he had struck a sign in the City of Ottawa and fled the scene prior to police arrival,” police said in a release.
Officers said they believed the driver was under the influence of alcohol. They administered a roadside screening device before he was brought back to the detachment for more testing.
The driver is charged with operation while impaired – alcohol and drugs and with blood alcohol content 80 plus.
The accused’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for a week.
