Teen caught for 3rd time in six months with stunt driving

One mom in Ottawa did not have a good Mother’s Day after her child was caught stunt driving in her vehicle, police say.

According to Ottawa police, they clocked a vehicle travelling 136 km/h on Leitrim Road on Sunday. Officers said they saw the vehicle make an unsafe pass, travelling almost double the speed limit.

The 17-year-old G2 driver was charged with stunt driving, their third charge since December 2025, police said.

As a result, the vehicle was impounded, the teen’s licence suspended, and they’re expected in an Ottawa court.

Previous statistics shared to CityNews from Ottawa Police Service’s (OPS) traffic enforcement unit show that since January 2023, there have been 21 people charged twice or more with stunt driving — generally categorized as 50 km/h over the speed limit.

While this is lower compared to overall stunt driving charges laid each year, Philip Kane, OPS’s street racing and stunt driving enforcement coordinator, says the numbers showcase a larger problem. He told CityNews in an interview that he’s pulled over several people before who have been caught stunt driving in other parts of the province.

“If I’m dealing with someone at the roadside, I’ll see their driving history, and I’ll see their conviction,” he said. “So, lots of times I’ll see they’ve been charged by Toronto or Halton (police) or OPP with stunt driving elsewhere.”
