Thousands of illegal cigarettes and $17,000 in cash taken by Ottawa police

Two people from the nation’s capital are facing a pair of charges after police found evidence of people selling tobacco products illegally.
The investigation started in March by the West Neighbourhood Resource Team after a community complaint of illegal sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. After gathering enough evidence for a search warrant, officers executed one at a home on Woodfield Drive in Nepean, off of Merivale Road.
Last week, police found and seized 346 cartons of illegal cigarettes, a quantity of shisha tobacco and more than $17,000 in currency. Officials believe the cash found is the proceeds of crime.
A man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s, both from Ottawa, were charged with selling tobacco products and raw leaf tobacco and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.
Under the Tobacco Tax Act (unless otherwise authorized), it is illegal to buy, possess, sell or distribute any amount of untaxed cigarettes or other tobacco products.
The investigation is ongoing.
